Course breakdown

What You'll Cover & Walk Away Wit

Each module directly maps to a course objective, giving you practical knowledge you can apply confidently under an individualised bowel care plan, every shift, every interaction.

  • Module 1 — Digestion, Bowel Function & Dysfunction
Understand normal digestive anatomy and how the bowel works day-to-day. Explore what healthy bowel function looks like and how to recognise common dysfunctions, including constipation, diarrhoea and faecal incontinence, so you can spot changes that require attention or escalation.
  • Module 2 — Individualised Bowel Care Plans
Learn how bowel care needs are identified, assessed and documented for individual participants. Understand your role in following a care plan accurately, what triggers a plan review, how updates are communicated across the team, and when escalation is required.
  • Module 3 — Interventions, Risks & Emergency Response
Identify the bowel care interventions that fall within your scope of practice and learn how to carry these out safely and respectfully. Develop confidence in recognising bowel-related risks and incidents, and understand the correct steps to take when responding to an emergency situation.
  • Module 4 — Dignity, Documentation & Escalation
Deliver personal care in a way that upholds participant dignity and privacy at every step. Record bowel care observations clearly and accurately, communicate changes during handover, and escalate concerns to the right person, at the right time, using the right language.
  • Module 5 — Assessment & Competency Demonstration
Consolidate your understanding through scenario-based quizzes and a final knowledge check aligned to the three course objectives. Demonstrate that you can support bowel care safely, respectfully and within scope, under an individualised bowel care plan.

Hear from support workers, team leaders, and providers who've completed our bowel and continence training.

Before this course I was copying what I thought the previous shift did. Now I understand the actual plan and I know exactly what I'm checking for. It's changed how I think about every routine.

Amara

The escalation module alone was worth it. I finally have language for what I'm seeing and I know who to call and what to say. Our nurses have noticed the improvement in our handover notes already.

Tomasz

We rolled this out across our whole SIL team before our NDIS audit. The auditor asked about our approach to complex bowel care and we could demonstrate documented worker training and a shared escalation process. Huge relief.
